GUESS That VOICE !!

coxvopic-copy.jpgWho’s voice is that? We hear people say that all the time these days when an Ad comes on TV or Radio. Ahh yes the celebrity voice over. Alot of huge companies hire celebs to voice for them. Lets see, Kiefer Sutherland for Apple and Ford, Kiefers Dad Donald for Volvo, Kevin Spacey for Honda, Christian Slater for Panasonic, Gene Hackman for Oppenheimer Funds and the list goes on and on. In studies it was found out that most people thought they recognised voice but were trying to figure out where they had heard it before. This leads me into the advertising dilemma, should one hire a celeb to do the voice over on a commercial? Is it worth the cost? Seeing’s that most celeb voices get paid 5 even 6 figures for series of maybe 6 commercials.
We’ve all had this happen. Slumped down on the sofa and that commercial comes on. You all look at each other and say …”Whos that voice”? Then everyone chimes in with their choice of a different celebrity voice. This may be fun but when you look at it, you may guess the voice but you’ve missed the message. And that my friend is just WRONG!! The advertiser has wasted his money, well maybe not, he might have been able to actually meet the celebrity…Oh Wow!! Forget your big expensive marketing studies, this is what real people do. Yes, your consumers.
Advertisers, Marketing people get a grip on reality and get your MESSAGE out there. I know some amazing voice over artists, myself included, that would give you a much better read for 4 and if you really want to slum 3 figures. Please stop the global game of “Guess That Voice”.

  1. The only way out of this dilemma is to hire me… and I’ll impersonate the celebrity for you!

Celeb VO’s definitely catch people’s attention. And you can’t deny that’s a big draw for any marketing campaign. How can we get the consumer to pay attention to our commercial?

I expect the trend will continue.

    My 2 cents,
    Joe
