My last post was about Prostitution so keeping on the topic of Hookers, because it’s been in the News so much lately, got me thinking about the business’s that I’m in. For over 25 years I’ve been in the Advertising, Voice Over and Stand-Up Comedy industries. I like to call myself a “Vocal Prostitute”. Not that I scream during sex (well come to think about it) but, I talk for money. There are so many parallels between the Voice Over business and being a hooker, it really is funny. I’m sure that you, when you look at what you do, you can relate as well. But in the Voice Over business, let’s look at a few of the similarities….
Hooker
You need a Pimp or Escort Agency to Rep you.
Voice Over
You get an Agent or sign up with an expensive on-line service that get you leads.
Hooker
A client looks at your file before meeting you
Voice Over
A client listens to your demo before hiring you.
Hooker
Your agency tells you that 50 potential clients have looked at your file. But clients never tell you if they really looked at file
Voice Over
Your on line agency has sent you 50 leads. You send out 50 demos but you never know if the client listened to your voice.
Hooker
Will work for 25-100 per client. You find these ones in back alleys and along the roadside.
Voice Over
Will work for 25-100 per client. You find these voices at the start of their career and with a “Barbie Microphone” that they borrowed from their sisters Karaoke machine.
Hooker
The experienced or lucky, with a good pimp work for 4000+ an hour
Voice Over
The experienced or the lucky, get good agent and live near an Entertainment hub city, work for 4000+ as well
Hooker
Is hired for the hour or longer to lay down
Voice Over
Is hired for a thirty seconds, minute or longer to speak up
Hooker
Is asked if they can do certain things and look like certain people
Voice Over
Is asked if the can sound like certain things or people.
Hooker
Profession is against the law, but practised in every country
Voice Over
With the advent of the internet, the Voice Over business is riddled with those still practising, but the good voices are heard in every country, legally, even New York State…lol
So, I don’t know about you, but I’m proud to be a whore, a vocal prostitute with some good pimps, but always looking for better. Like everyone in this business I want to climb the ladder of success with my mouth…lol. I LOVE this business!!

Well, the history of prostitution is very interesting. One major invention, the telephone changed the profession considerably and gave to us the term “call girl”. Certainly we see changes in the voice over industry affecting things as well.
I have to say though that when I complain to friends who many of are respected in quite diverse and differnet fields, many will say the same thing. It appears that the sale and procurement of less than mediocre services is rampant. Then agian, in the United States anyway we’ve proven that cheap and disposable is what most people want.
It should alos be known that history might show that voiceover and not prostitution is indeed the first profession, owing to the fact that someone probably presented the fact that there was a potential covenant to be had (commercial) and another may have accepted on behalf of the “John”, thus being an agent.
Of course, Bryan missed the most obvious thing that voice actors and hookers have in common. We both fake orgasm very well.

The main idea of the essay “A She-Savior” is that the legalization of prostitution must be based on a return of its divine, sacred character, so that prostitution will be considered the most honorable profession, the one closest to God, the holiest.
