Host of a NEW Show

As a voice over guy and stand-up I find myself being thrust into an unlikely new role. The Borderline Radio Network has asked me to host a weekly radio show, that’s now been picked up by them for syndication. This is a great honour and believe me a ton of fun. I’ll be running a show each week called “Old School”. This show features music and entertainment tid-bits from the 60’s through to the 80’s. Currently with a few complete shows done and in the can, things are looking up. I’m doing interviews within the 1 hour show. So far I’ve had great chats with Ken Marco, guitarist from the group Motherlode, Rick Coonce drummer from the Grass Roots, Tom Wilson from Back to the Future, Ernie Hudson “Ghostbuster etc.” and have quite a few more big names coming up, but I’m always looking. This is where you can help, if you want. If you know anyone from the music, entertainment, political industries that were popular anywhere from the 60’s through to the 80’s, I’d love to talk with them. Even if you know an agent that handles these folks, I’d love to talk to them. If you want to pass on my email, please do. This is a labour of love for me and free promotion for them. So if you know anyone that might want a friendly fun interview, let me know…and by the way I don’t bite. bigbry@sasktel.net

The BBC …Breaks Up Laughing !!

Big Bry the Voice Guy  If you need a giggle this is it. Working in broadcasting can be trying at times. There are the moments that a naughty word slips out or you get the giggles at just the wrong time. Anyone that’s been in Voice Overs or Broadcasting can say..”been there done that.”

Something happened on the BBC this morning that made the nation giggle!! I have to thank Geoffrey James, one of my favorite writers, for the heads up on this.

Hundreds of listeners have contacted BBC Radio 4 after newsreader Charlotte Green dissolved into giggles while reading a bulletin on Today.
She lost control after playing a clip of the oldest known recording of the human voice.
Presenter James Naughtie intervened as she struggled to tell listeners about the death of screenwriter Abby Mann.
“I’m afraid I just lost it, I was completely ambushed by the giggles,” said Green.
She admitted a similar giggling fit besieged her about 10 years ago, also on the Today programme.
“I did feel slightly embarrassed, knowing I have this reputation that I am prone to getting the giggles,” she said.
“People have been very sweet and everyone has been coming up to me said how much it has cheered up their Friday morning.”
Today’s editor, Ceri Thomas, said most listeners who contacted the show had commented on “how much they had enjoyed the moment”.
He added: “When Charlotte loses it, she really loses it.”

Thanks for the read and hope you get a giggle

Web Ads–don’t get ripped off

Big Bry the Voice Guy Marketing through the internet might be new to you. Advertisers are flocking to get their message out to a new audience. I myself have advertised on the web and was successful in scaring up some new business. So it works, but it can be expensive and there are, like in any realm of business, the fraudsters just lying in wait. Harvard Business have come out with a few ways not to be ripped off by the nice folks offering you increased traffic to your website. If you’re thinking of buying any web advertising please read this first. Sean Silverthorne has written a very good article called How Web Advertisers Can Avoid Being Ripped Off.
Thanks for the read and hope it helps.

Helping VOICE …History !!

Commercials are great, being on an On Hold Message is fine but having your Voice featured in a movie is a dream for any voice over actor.
Eddy van Hamersveld has been working on a labour of love for over 2 years now and “Nadya’s Fritzes” is still in the works but moving forward with a First Preview showcasing soon. I was brought on board about a year ago and have handled the narration through out the movie.

This is a singled out story of a sniper woman during W.W.II who fought on the side of Russia. She was one of these courageous snipers women who became the best in the business.
Nadya, a fictional character based on true events, rose to the challenge and she became the cream of the crop but at what price this story asks.
“Nadyas Fritzes” is a touching, disturbing, true story of the heart, courage, loss, politics, as seen through the eyes of Nadya, her Mother and others. Each of the, well credited, actors in this movie, superbly portray each part. They each add something you rarely hear these days…heart!!

Mr. Van Hamersveld say’s it’s not like what Pixar would do as it’s more Psychedelic and improvised. So it’s an animation with many psychedelic turns. He calls it “Psychemation”.
I have to say it’s been an honour to work on such a ground breaking original film. “Please keep your eyes open and look for Nadya’s Fritzes previews and promos before this feature film animation hits the film festival circuit.” If you’d like to see the “under constrution” web page, check out, Nadya’s Fritzes

The Audio Book Voice Over

road-storiescd-cover.jpeg

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT !!! Just a picture of an AUDIO BOOK COVER!! YES…ADVERTISING!!!

Some of you know, other than a voice over guy, I’m also a stand-up comic. Very early on I realized that stand-up comedy is about the hardest job in the world and only a few get to taste super stardom and that isn’t based on talent either. Over the last 18 years all I wanted to do is make a living for my family, from having folks from other families laugh for awhile. When you’re on the road with other comics you end up telling stories to each other and it always ends up the same way, one of you says, Hey someone should write a book about the real world of stand-up and tell some of these stories”. Well folks, I did just that. I sat down at the computer and raked my brain for some of the great and not so great moments from the road and also remembered the stories other comics had told me, the famous and not so famous comics. Found out that no one wanted to publish this kind of book so I decided to do the other thing I love…VOICE OVER. I’ve put over 25 stories into an Audio Book called “Road Stories of the Real Highway Comics”. Ending up writing, narrating and producing it all myself. The final product has now been picked up for download by iTunes, Audible.com, Amazon.com, so I’m pretty proud of the whole thing. You say, “what about reviews?” Well here’s a couple…
“Road Stories has been skilfully produced into hours of easily digested material for hardcore comedy crazies. It’s rare that comedy fans get a glimpse inside the lives of comics you never heard of, the ones that eek out a living crisscrossing the country, performing at town halls, bars, the occasional club and fighting for a few drink tickets and decent motel in which to sleep. You should pick this up”.
Dylan Gadino-Editor/Chief Punchline Magazine…. Full Review Here
Punchline is THE magazine about the comedy industry.

“Stand-up comedy is not for wimps. Anybody thinking about the easy life of being a comic should spend time with veteran comedy road warrior Bryan Cox before hitting an open-mic night and throwing themselves to the two-drink minimum lions. Honest, up-front and profoundly caffeinated, Cox shares insights and memories delivered with a hard-boiled authenticity that can’t be faked. These stories would be as welcome as a Stephen King paperback on a long flight”.

I’ve got a small website up if you want to check out the audio book, www.comicroadstories.com or www.audible.com or just search the audio book section on iTunes for “Road Stories of the Real Highway Comics”.
Please buy my book or I’ll have to eat my dog…lol

First stab at Blogging…here we go

I’m the guy you hear but never see. You might think that’s kind of weird but that’s the life of a Voice Over guy. That’s right, the voice on commercials, narrations for trade shows, TV and Radio Programs, animation and alot more. I also write most of the scripts I get to read. That way I really know how it should sound to get the message out the way the client wants it. I’ve done this for over 25 years now…that my friend makes me a professional, or if you’d like, just pretty damn good at it.
Stand Up Comedy is also a passion of mine and has been for over 18 years now. I’m not talking about watching Stand-Up. I’m talking about getting out there and …doing it. Had some pretty sweet gigs so far too, like opening for a few greats such as, Wayne Newton and Tom Jones. Alot of folks ask me what it’s like to be a Comedian and that started me to thinking. So, I wrote, produced and voiced an audio book about the un-seen world of Stand-Up, it’s called “Road Stories of the Real Highway Comics”. By the way, Leno, O’Brien, Ferguson all have copies and you should too…here’s a hint, iTunes audio book section.
What I hope to do with this blog is hand out information about what the trends are in marketing your business, the voice over industry and also alittle comedy thrown in for good measure. I don’t know if you can add sound files to this blog but I’m going to stay with this and try to figure things out…
Cheers
Bryan Cox
